Building Access & Security Technician

Department: Facilities
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
The Building Access & Security Technician is responsible for the field-based installation,
maintenance, programming, repair, and operation of the College's physical security and
access control systems. Working under the direction of the Building Access and
Security Specialist, this position supports campus safety through the management of
mechanical and electronic locking systems, key records, credentials, and associated
security technologies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and replaces card readers, electric strikes, and mechanical locks
  • Cut new or replacement keys for authorized personnel following campus procedures using key cutting equipment and software. Maintain accurate records of all keys and locks.
  • Maintain and administer the S2 system to perform the following:
  1. Electronic reset of door modules and nodes to resolve technical issues
  2. Create varying door access programs for departments across campus
  3. Perform daily unlock and lock functions of all doors
  4. Cross reference door access with key access when requests are received
  5. Work with IT on program related S2 issues.
  6. Review S2 automated reports daily for issues with doors or readers.
  7. Troubleshoot mercury panels using a laptop to perform hard resets at the panels. Confirm operation using the technology to activate nodes and check for proper response.
  8. Ensure building floor plans are regularly monitored and updated to maintain accuracy.
  9. Assign door numbers to floor plans as needed.
  • Maintain and administer the Atrium system to perform the following:
  1. Assign access levels for all Staff, Faculty, and Student Raider Cards.
  2. Check door access information for any door and at any location.
  3. Check parking access information for any Raider Card.
  4. Create access levels in Atrium to allow S2 readers to communicate correctly between programs. Confirm successful data integration with both programs to ensure proper system operations.
  5. Audit Raider Card access reports for errors.
  • Grant access using the Atrium and S2 access systems.
  • Represent the Lock Shop during design, construction, renovation, and capital projects by reviewing hardware schedules, coordinating security requirements, and verifying installation of locking and access control systems.
  • Provide assistance and support to GRCC Police by:
  1. Creating weekend event schedules for doors.
  2. Creating weekly class schedules that fall outside of the normal building operating hours.
  3. Providing support to the Building Access & Security Specialist through the authorized opening and closing of doors
  4. Support in the administration of Campus lockdowns for inclement weather & other security reasons.
  5. Perform soft resets of doors as a first step in troubleshooting a door that is not functioning properly.
  • Support the management and maintenance of the Keystone Web key system for college security by keeping accurate documentation of hardware changes and new lock installations in each building, and repairing, and maintaining cylinders for locks in the master key system
  • SFIC- Small format interchangeable 7 pin core system:
  1. Support the management and maintenance Management of multiple keyways, one system, use of Keystone Web and Excel for building audits as well as extensive use of the Keystone database management software
  2. Pin SFIC cores.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive security information, key records, access credentials, and security system data.
  • Manage security, intrusion, and documentation of fire panel credentialing.
  • Monitor, maintain, and update multiple sophisticated security systems.
  • Maintain accurate and current records of all campus access and security systems (Keystone, Atrium, S2, EPS, etc.).
  • Lay out and modify key systems for the entire campus.
  • Analyze and interpret hardware schedules, door schedules, and lock patterns, and update related records based on approved requests and operational needs.
  • Oversee and support the repairs and replacement of electric strikes on campus
  • doors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Educational Credentials
  • Associates degree preferred.
  • Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office for programming, database management, reporting, spreadsheet development, and cross-functional communication.

Work Experience

  • 1 – 2 years of experience managing mechanical and electronic door hardware, key systems, and physical access controls in a commercial or facilities setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of Atrium and S2 electronic access systems preferred.

Skills

  • Experience with electronic access control systems (such as S2 and Atrium),
  • Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications, and related security management software.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Analytical ability to lay out and modify key systems and electronic security access software

Physical Demands

  • Sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks
  • Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds
  • Stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, climb (use a ladder, scaffolds, or other)
  • Kneel/crawl, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts

Mental Demands

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple assignments while responding effectively to routine and time-sensitive campus needs

Working Conditions

  • GRCC will comply with any mandated health and safety requirements.

  • Approximately half the work day transpires in an office/shop setting
  • Approximately half the work day takes place on campus. Ability to work inside or outside in all weather conditions required
  • Means and ability to travel to College campuses and facilities as well as pertinent conferences and seminars
  • Must be able to travel to and traverse campus(s) to accomplish projects, meetings, and oversight of physical plant
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position
  • May be required to provide on-call support outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to address urgent campus access and security needs.
